Event Details - Personal Philosophy is the Best Practice: how we find our humanity

Title: Personal Philosophy is the Best Practice: how we find our humanity
Type of Activity: Workshops & Seminars
Objective of Course / Workshop:

International Guest Event

Whatever theoretical underpinning informs your practice, join Professor Keith Tudor to explore the benefits and challenges of being person-centred.

This 2-day workshop will appeal to counsellors who weave into their practice (or base it on) humanistic and/or existential approaches; practitioners of any modality who are interested in the notion of prioritising their personal philosophy in their work with clients.

Course / Workshop Outline:
  • Examine your own practice and its underlying 'values orientation'
  • Consider how we distinguish between practice, theory and philosophy
  • Identify your own “clinical philosophy”
  • Critique humanistic psychotherapy as a “Third Force” of Psychotherapy – identifying where it has been informed by different philosophical views and where it might have become “stuck”
  • Reconsider the relationship between humanistic and existential values and traditions – identifying ways in which they differ and ways in which they are complementary to each other
OPD points: 10
Course / Workshop content:

Our practice is grounded in some views, beliefs and values we have and hold, which in turn, are based on what we might call personal philosophy. This 2-day workshop will deconstruct therapeutic practice, theory, and personal philosophy, especially within the humanistic/existential traditions.

The 2-days will encompass a rich combination of teaching, demonstrations, group work and practice in pairs. You will leave this workshop with:

  • An understanding of what it might mean for you and your practice to have a more philosophical stance when working with clients
  • Greater awareness of the relational aspects of humanistic and existential approaches and what you might take from them.
  • A deeper understanding of the challenges of being person-centred rather than theory-centred and purist
  • Greater clarity on who and how you are as a values-based and theory-informed therapeutic practitioner
