ONE-DAY PROFESSIONAL TRAINING

A comprehensive one-day training course that equips you with the knowledge to teach parents and carers skills to resolve their teenager’s behaviour problems.

Expected learning outcomes:

  • The ability to conduct the Engaging Adolescents™ program, as either a three-meeting parent education course or to teach the program one-to-one.
  • Knowledge to teach parents about adolescent challenges and how to hold reasonable expectations of their adolescent.
  • Knowledge of easy-to-use techniques that parents and carers can use to enlist adolescents to manage their own behaviour and emotional reactions, to build a relationship with their teenager and strategies to deal with unacceptable behaviour.

Course / Workshop Outline:

The structure of this course provides you with a model to teach to parents, for working out what behaviour needs to be ignored, how to coach teenagers to consider the consequences of their actions and how to hold difficult conversations when expectations are breached. A practical how-to guide for parents.

Lesson Framework

  1. The practitioner training course curriculum for working with parents.
  2. The common ground shared by parents in Australia.
  3. What are reasonable expectations to hold about adolescents?
  4. New understandings of adolescence: social landscapes, brain snaps and body makeovers.
  5. A three-option model and flowchart for decision-making to manage a teenager’s problem behaviour.
  • Option 1 – Self check for parents: how to bring awareness to family of origin issues, trauma issues and how to avoid over-reacting or becoming continuously angry with your teenager.
  • Option 2 – Build your relationship: How to strengthen the bond you have with your teenager and make the best of your non-crisis conversations.
  • Option 3 – Tough conversations: how to handle discussing those problems you can’t ignore. This includes how to figure out the problem, how to prepare for engaging your teenager in a tough conversation, and how to set-up agreements.
