Title: Autism Spectrum Disorder - Teaching Strategies and Behaviour Support with Sue Larkey
Type of Activity: Workshops & Seminars
Objective of Course / Workshop:

Counsellors are an integral part of the team supporting a student with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or similar developmental delays.  They will be called upon to support teachers, teacher assistants, students and families.  This full day workshop focuses on the classroom and will assist support team members to identify the challenges to learning experienced by the student with an ASD and faced by the teacher of a student with ASD.  The course presents a model (Ten Key Strategies) to assist all team members to develop skills and confidence for "Making it a Success".

It has been observed that many educators and clinicians focus on the behaviours of the child/student with an ASD.  This program takes the approach that to understand and effectively manage behaviours it is essential to first develop a good understanding of the Keys to Success – understanding ASD, motivation, good communication and positive supports. Hence the workshop addresses behaviour at the end of the program referencing the materials presented earlier in the session.  The presenter stresses the importance of differentiating between sensory ‘meltdowns’ and behaviour ‘meltdowns’ and provides practical strategies for minimising the incidence and severity of all types of behaviour meltdowns.

Course / Workshop Outline:

The workshop is delivered in one day over five hours, plus a morning tea and lunch break (included in registration fee).  Attendees will have the opportunity to inspect and purchase a range of resources referenced during the workshop.
