Title: Certificate in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Objective of Course / Workshop:

In this four-day training course, participants will develop a thorough theoretical understanding of cognitive behaviour therapy and the skills specific to this mode of therapy. 

At the end of the program they will be able to identify activating events, beliefs and consequences; utilise disputational skills;  demonstrate the ability to enhance the client's development of constructive thoughts; and use CBT with problems involving depression, anxiety and anger.

This course is suitable for the beginner or those wishing to refresh or build upon their existing skills. A qualification in a health or "helping" profession (eg teaching, social work, counselling etc) is a prerequisite.

Course / Workshop Outline:

9 am - 5 pm each day;  morning tea 10.30 am;  lunch 12.30; afternoon tea 3.30 pm

Daily structure:  9 am - 12.30 lecturer input;  12.30 - 2 pm lunch and skills practice and recording with partner;  2-5 pm discussion and skills supervision.

The course comprises twelve hours of teaching including lectures, modelling, discussion, demonstrations and group activities with experiential exercises, and a minimum of twelve hours of intensive practice and supervision of CBT skills in small groups.

Course / Workshop content:

On the first day there is an introduction to CBT.  On the three subsequent days, using CBT with depression, anxiety and anger are covered.  Over the lunch break participants are expected to practice their skills in pairs;  record these practice sessions and play them back during the afternoon supervision, where participants will work in small groups of approximately 8 people with a trainer, focussing on skills development.

Experience:

Dr Monica O’Kelly is director of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Australia and an honorary lecturer at Monash University. She is an Associate Fellow of the Albert Ellis Institute and a member of the Training and Policy Review Committee of the Albert Ellis Institute. She has also completed the Extra Mural Program at the Beck Institute and is a Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.

She has written many journal articles and reported on her research at international and national conferences. She has had considerable experience teaching cognitive behaviour therapy and believes that to teach therapy well the participants must be given the opportunity to practice and be given constructive feedback. Dr O’Kelly is a member of the Clinical College and the Educational and Developmental College of the Australian Psychological Society.

Dr DiMattia is a Human Relations Consultant who has been Executive Director and Senior Staff Supervisor at the Albert Ellis Institute. He was previously Vice President of Human Resources for the Fireman Group in New York. He is Professor Emeritus of Counselling and Human Resources at the University of Bridgeport.

Dom has co-authored books, written numerous journal articles, and conducted hundreds of workshops and seminars as a consultant and mental health trainer.

A member of the American Psychological Association, he has presented papers, lectures, and workshops in Australia, the United States and Europe.
