Title: Postgraduate Training in Clinical Hypnosis

Objective of Course / Workshop:

Students will:
1. Gain an understanding as to the nature of hypnosis and its history as an application in therapy;
2. Learn to identify the phenomena associated with trance;
3. Learn how to assess hypnotic capacity using a standard test and scoring both quantitative and qualitative data;
4. Learn how to write suitable scripts for clients, to achieve induction, deepening and de-induction;
5. Learn how to apply trance with different clients to achieve therapeutic outcomes;
6. Learn the contraindications to hypnosis and the categories of clients for whom clinical hypnosis is not appropriate;
7. Learn how to deal with any difficulties for clients that may arise during the use of trance; and
8. Identify those clients who may benefit most from clinical hypnosis.

Course / Workshop Outline:

The Postgraduate Training Course in Clinical Hypnosis consists of fully integrated online and face-to-face training components that together give students the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to effectively utilise clinical hypnosis in the professional setting.

Component I: The Basics of Hypnosis

Component II: Scripts for Trance Induction and Guided Imagery

Component III: Indirect Techniques . Hypnosis with Habit Disorders

Component IV: Applications of Hypnosis

Course / Workshop content:

Online Component

Students complete 9 online modules covering the basics of hypnosis, incl homework assignments. Approx 60 hours work.

Students complete Homework Exercises between face-to-face days. Approx 50 hours.

Face-to-Face Component

Students attend five F2F days of presentations and group work. 25 Hours.

Barry Evans PhD was a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Monash University before moving to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne in 2002. He has written three books on clinical hypnosis and has taught clinical hypnosis since 1986. He was Editor of the Australian Journal of Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis in the 1990s.

Diane McGreal is a Psychologist with over 30 years experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist. She uses clinical hypnosis extensively in her private practice and is a skilled trainer of clinical hypnosis, having presented at national and international conferences on the topic. She taught clinical hypnosis to a group of Clinical Psychologists in Hong Kong in 2018. She was recently President of the Australian Society of Hypnosis.
