Event Details - An Invitation to Bring Body and Self to Supervision

Title: An Invitation to Bring Body and Self to Supervision
Type of Activity: Workshops & Seminars
Objective of Course / Workshop:

International Guest Event for Supervisors

Exploration of how attending to embodied experience can expand our repertoire as supervisors

Course / Workshop Outline:
  • experiential exploration of how we respond to what people ‘show’ in their bodies
  • experiential exploration of how people respond to what we ‘show’ in our bodies
  • considerations of body posture, gesture and facial expression
  • considerations of how the body communicates social differences such as race, gender and age

OPD points: 5
Course / Workshop content:

In this workshop, we will start from the position that we speak, not only with our words, but also with our bodies – with bodily position, posture and gesture; with tone of voice; with our felt bodily responses to each other. We embody the cultures of our ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, ability, age; how our bodies express and are shaped by the differential power associated with those aspects of our identities. We will explore and develop a repetoire of practices to work with embodiment in supervision that will include:

  • noticing ways we communicate through and with our bodies
  • reflecting on what our bodies bring to the therapeutic and supervisory encounter
  • recognising how our bodies express and are shaped by the differential power associated with the various aspects of our identity
  • preparing our bodies for the therapeutic/supervisory relationship
