Professor Catherine Sun
Bio and Qualifications:
Professor Catherine Sun was born in Shanghai and moved to Hong Kong with her family at the age of seven. She obtained her baccalaureate in sociology and psychology from Cornell College in the States, and her master’s and doctorate from the University of Hong Kong.
After seven years in the Correctional Services, Catherine started her private practice in applied professional psychology in Hong Kong in the early eighties. She has authored over thirty books and numerous peer-reviewed articles in both Chinese and English on the subjects of psychology, counselling and psychotherapy.
She has been in her current position as Head of the Department of Counselling and Psychology at the Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) for 10 years. Under her leadership, HKSYU now has the only baccalaureate double-major program in counselling and psychology in Asia, and the only master’s programme in counselling psychology in Hong Kong and China. She is also the President of Asia Professional Counselling Association, and Asia Pacific Rim Confederation of Counsellors.
Catherine is devoted to the development of a body of knowledge that can be generically referred to as Chinese Psychology, and a corresponding model of Chinese Counselling and Psychotherapy.
